Activity: A Visit to View the Newnham College Suffrage Artefacts

20 November 2018, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Better is Wisdom Than Weapons of War

“Better is Wisdom than Weapons of War”

A rare opportunity to view some of the unique items that comprise the Newnham College collection
Join us on a visit to Newnham College to see their acclaimed suffrage banner. First seen during a procession organised by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies on 13 June 1908, the magnificent standard was designed by Mary Lowndes and realised by students from Newnham and Girton Colleges. It was subsequently used in protests and processions until 1913.

The visit will include a chance to see items donated by the artist and collector Christiana Herringham (1852-1929), an early benefactor of the college and an influential suffrage campaigner, who bequeathed a significant collection of European and oriental textiles and furniture along with examples of her own paintings in egg tempera and watercolour.

Textiles expert Carolyn Ferguson will be present to explain about the design and production of the banner.

With only eight tickets in total available, this is an opportunity not to miss.

Tickets are available from Eventbrite at a cost of £3.00 each. The tour will start at 2:00pm from the Porter’s Lodge at Newnham College
