DESCRIPTION:Discover the world of writing historical fiction with Susan Grossey\, local author of the Cambridge Hardiman Mysteries! \nWriter Susan Grossey has published ten historical crime novels\, all set in the 1820s and with justice\, policing and finance at their heart. In this free-range talk (she encourages lots of audience questions!) join Susan as she discusses her novel inspirations\, and talk about how she maintains historical accuracy through featuring real people and places while making up plots and other characters. \n\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter a brief flirtation with teaching English in secondary schools\, Susan stumbled into technical writing and then found her true vocation: educating the financial sector about the dangers of money laundering. She ran her own anti-money laundering consultancy for twenty-five years\, retiring three years ago to concentrate more fully on writing historical crime fiction – always with a financial angle. DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Cambridge invites families to rediscover the much-loved childhood classic Angelina Ballerina\, with ‘Making Angelina: The World of Helen Craig’\, a new exhibition running from 14 February to 1 June 2026. \nFor more than 40 years\, Angelina Ballerina has captured the hearts of young readers around the world. With over 20 books in the series written by Katharine Holabird and illustrated by Helen Craig\, the stories follow a young mouse named Angelina and her adventures as she pursues her dreams of becoming a ballerina. Today\, visitors can step inside Angelina’s world and explore how the beloved characters were created from first sketches to finished books. \nThe exhibition celebrates the work of Cambridgeshire illustrator Helen Craig\, whose own childhood growing up in Hertfordshire in the 1930s and 1940s inspired the intricately detailed scenes that bring the Angelina Ballerina stories to life. \nOn display will be formative character sketches\, original drawings and behind the scenes material showing how each story takes shape. Families visiting the exhibition can immerse themselves into Angelina’s world through everyday items featured in the books and enjoy the chance to create their own performances on the big stage! \n‘Making Angelina: The World of Helen Craig’ opens during February half-term and runs from 14 February to 1 June at the Museum of Cambridge. DESCRIPTION:We’re lighting up the past this February Half Term at the Museum of Cambridge\, with trails and crafts relating to the Magic Lantern. \nMagic lanterns were an early type of image projector – the ancestor of film projectors used today – which were used for education and entertainment during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries. \nThroughout the week\, take part in a trail through the Museum and use recreation magic lanterns to see a story from Cambridge’s incredible history. \nBut that’s not all\, we are also running FREE drop-in craft sessions for you to create your own magic lantern slide picture. Come and see an original magic lantern from the Museum’s collection and try out your slide on our recreation lantern. \nWe’re also delighted to be involved in Twilight at the Museums again this year\, with a late opening on Wednesday 18th February. We’ll dim the lights and let you explore our historic building in the twilight from 4-7pm.
