Make your own lantern slide in our drop-in craft session. \n  \nAt this FREE drop-in craft session for children aged 5 and over\, come along and craft your very own projection slides for a Victorian-style lantern based on one from the collection. Then\, find more Magic Lanterns to light your way through the Museum’s 16th-century building and illuminate the fascinating history of Cambridge. \n  \nHave a look at an authentic Victorian lantern and learn about the history of cinema. \n  \nThis activity is running multiple times throughout Half Term and there’s no need to book\, just pop by the Enid Porter room and get crafting. \n  \nDates and Times: \nMonday 16th February 11:00-15:00 \nTuesday 17th February 11:00-15:00 \nWednesday 18th February 16:00-19:00 \nFriday 20th February 11:00-15:00 \n  \nTickets: \nThere is no need to book a ticket for this event. SUMMARY:February Half Term 2026 - Illuminating History
DESCRIPTION:We’re lighting up the past this February Half Term at the Museum of Cambridge\, with trails and crafts relating to the Magic Lantern. \nMagic lanterns were an early type of image projector – the ancestor of film projectors used today – which were used for education and entertainment during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries. \nThroughout the week\, take part in a trail through the Museum and use recreation magic lanterns to see a story from Cambridge’s incredible history. \nBut that’s not all\, we are also running FREE drop-in craft sessions for you to create your own magic lantern slide picture. Come and see an original magic lantern from the Museum’s collection and try out your slide on our recreation lantern. \nWe’re also delighted to be involved in Twilight at the Museums again this year\, with a late opening on Wednesday 18th February. We’ll dim the lights and let you explore our historic building in the twilight from 4-7pm. DESCRIPTION:Stories of Steelpans \nGet hands-on and explore the history of the Caribbean Steelpan at our new music workshop! \nBrought to the UK from the Caribbean in the 1930s and 1940s\, steelpans have been handmade for generations! In this interactive workshop\, learn about the history of pan making\, how pans are played\, and the history of steel pan music in Cambridge. \nBringing up ideas of golden sunsets and beachside music\, steelpans have an amazing Caribbean history. Homemade and tuned to only a few notes at a time\, steelpans have developed into complex and beautiful instruments. \nPart of the Legacies of Windrush Exhibition\, funded by the Arts Council\, this one-hour workshop led by Jenny Ramsey is perfect for families with children aged 10+.
