SUMMARY:Museum of Cambridge and Cambridge Old Quarter Tour
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history of Cambridge with this guided tour of the Museum of Cambridge and Cambridge’s Old Quarter.\n\n\n\nOverview\nDeparture Time: 10am\, every Monday \nDuration: 90 minutes \nMeeting Point: The courtyard of Museum of Cambridge\, 2-3 Castle St\, Cambridge CB3 0AQ \nImportant Information: \n\nPlease arrive 5 minutes early\nPlease dress appropriately for the weather as this tour will be both indoors and outdoors\nThis is a shared tour conducted in English\n\n\n\n\n\nTour highlights:\nWant to hear about the history of Cambridge beyond just the history of the University? \nThe tour begins with the origins of Cambridge and the Castle Mound site\, before the University came to the town. You will learn about the history of the White Horse Inn to Leach pub signs\, from Napoleon invading(!) to traffic lights. It will conjure up images of people dropping in for a pint at the magnificent old inn building\, and consider the burning issues of the day they may have been discussing. \nFind out about the biggest dinner in Cambridge\, the origins of the word snob\, and which toys kids would have been allowed to play with on Sundays. If you are lucky\, you might hear of links to Graham Greene\, Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking\, and discover why being giant\, a witch or a good liar is not a bad thing. \nYour Tour Guide\nProfessional tour guide Chris Jagger has lived as both ‘Town and Gown’ of Cambridge: first as a student and then a fellow of the University of Cambridge\, and now is one of the townsfolk. He has written history tours\, ghost tours\, women’s tours and more about Cambridge. An advisor and former trustee of the Museum\, Chris is leading these tours on a voluntary basis\, so the entirety of the ticket price supports the upkeep of the Museum. \n  \n\n\n\n\nSupporting the Museum of Cambridge\nThe Museum of Cambridge is an independent charity and does not receive funds from the Cambridge Council or the University of Cambridge. Your ticket supports the continued running and conservation care of the Museum and its objects\, and includes the entry fee of the Museum (usually £6/Adult\, £4.5/Student or Jobseeker). \nBooking is essential. Follow the Eventbrite link to book: Museum of Cambridge and Cambridge Old Quarter Tour Tickets\, Multiple Dates | Eventbrite \n  \nThings to note:\nGetting Here\nPlease arrive five minutes early prior to the tour start\, and meet in the courtyard of the Museum. \nWe are in the centre of Cambridge. You’ll find us at the corner of Castle Street and Northampton Street. We are right beside Kettle’s Yard and only a 15-minute walk from King’s College. \nYou can park your bike at the bike parks on Bridge Street or on Northampton Street. There is a bus stop on Bridge Street. Check out the Stagecoach website to plan your journey to and from the Museum. Find out more about how to get here by train\, bike\, bus\, car or on foot on our website. \nAccessibility\nThe Museum of Cambridge is unforutunately not wheelchair accessible\, which you can read about our accessibility information (Accessibility – The Museum of Cambridge) on our website. There are also steps within the tour\, and the walking tour has limited seating opportunities. If you’d like to chat through any accessibility requirements\, don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01223 355159 or email sumyin.wong@museumofcambridge.org.uk. Event attendees with additional needs are welcome to bring a supporter or carer who will be admitted to the event free of charge. \nRefund Policy\nWe are happy to transfer your ticket to another week up to 24 hours notice before the event\, if necessary. We will refund your ticket up to 24 hours before the event\, but will be unable to refund the administration fee Eventbrite takes from the ticket \nHealthy Events\nIf you’re feeling unwell or have recently tested positive for Covid-19\, please do not attend this tour. We will be happy to offer you a refund as per our refund policy\, and welcome you at the Museum on another day. \nPhotography\nPlease note that photographs may be taken throughout this event\, and images may be used in future marketing and reporting materials. If you do not wish you or your family’s photograph to be taken\, please make sure to let us know.

SUMMARY:Hidden Cambridge Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Journey through the streets of Hidden Cambridge \nThis Hidden Cambridge tour is for all those who have always meant to explore the side streets and alleyways of this historic city but never quite had the time\, as well as for visitors who want to discover more of Cambridge beyond King’s Parade. \nDiscover the heart of the ancient city\, some of the hidden nooks and crannies you’ve never noticed before around the river crossing and quayside area – traces of the Roman settlement\, the Norman castle\, the Saxon and Viking trading centre and the medieval town. Hear stories of beer\, brothels and boatmen!  \nQualified Blue Badge Guides will share their extensive knowledge of the local area – you won’t find these stories in the guidebooks! \nThe tour is subject to COVID-19 regulations in place at the time\, and the groups will be small and conducted in a safe way. For booking click here.  \nThe tours meet the first Sunday of the month\, at 10.30am outside the Round Church on Bridge Street. Each tour lasts about 90 minutes and the cost of £15 a head includes a free one-time admission to the Museum of Cambridge. All proceeds go towards supporting the Museum. \nThis small\, independent museum\, located in the former White Horse Inn\, has a big story to share. Suffused with the history of the local people of Cambridge\, it contains an eclectic collection of everyday objects used in day-to-day life\, from vacuum cleaners and washing machines to false teeth and mantraps! \nOpening times are limited currently\, check the web site for up to date hours. This tour is organised and run by Hidden Cambridge\, for further details contact Hidden.Cambridge@gmail.com. \n The Museum of Cambridge is hugely thankful to the generous support of the Blue Badge Guides who give up their time to offer these tours. \nFeatured photo by Bob Wheatley The Round ChurchPortugal PlaceThrough the Door of St Peter’sThe Hawks’ Club

SUMMARY:March Walking Tour: Hidden Cambridge and the Museum of Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Journey through the streets of Hidden Cambridge to the Museum of Cambridge \nA walking tour for local residents who have always meant to explore the side streets and alleyways but never quite had the time\, as well as for visitors to our city who want to discover more of Cambridge beyond King’s Parade. \nJoin us as we explore Hidden Cambridge\, taking in the streets\, alleys\, buildings and history of the people living in the area between St John’s College and Quayside — the centre of trade that made the town a thriving inland port long before the first students arrived — before crossing the river to Castle Hill and the location of the Roman settlement of Duroliponte\, the 2\,000 year-old forerunner of the city we know today. \nThe 90-minute tour will start outside the Main Entrance to St John’s College and end at the Museum of Cambridge. While it may not resemble a Greek temple\, this small\, independent museum located in a former coaching inn has a big story to share. Suffused with the history of the local people of Cambridge\, it contains an eclectic collection of everyday objects used in day-to-day life\, from vacuum cleaners and washing machines to false teeth and mantraps! \nThe tour will be led by a Cambridge Badged Guide\, who will give their time for free – reflecting their high regard for both the Museum of Cambridge and the local history of our city. \nTickets are available at £10.00 per person\, which includes an annual pass to the Museum\, from the Visit Cambridge website. \nChildren under 12 years of age can attend for free when accompanied by an adult. \nThe Round ChurchPortugal PlaceThrough the Door of St Peter’sThe Hawks’ Club
