SUMMARY:Cambridge Festival of Cycling Talk: Did Queen Victoria Ride a Bike?
DESCRIPTION:A story of the birth of the simplest yet essential and popular machines known to man. \nThis talk is part of the Cambridge Festival of Cycling. It will cover the development of the bicycle in an informal and relaxed way and build a picture of the world into which it had been born\, the Victorian Age and Industrial Revolution and on into the 21st century. \nImagine a world without a wheel. Around 3500BC the potters of Mesopotamia started using a simple turntable. They had created a wheel. Men and women used wheels in pairs\, threes\, fours and fives but not until 1790 was a machine created with two wheels which they could sit astride and move using their legs. The bicycle had arrived. It took another 30 years for it to be fitted with steering! The addition of pedals took another 10 years! \nFree.

DESCRIPTION:Journey through the streets of Hidden Cambridge to the Museum of Cambridge \nA walking tour for local residents who have always meant to explore the side streets and alleyways but never quite had the time\, as well as for visitors to our city who want to discover more of Cambridge beyond King’s Parade. \nJoin us as we explore Hidden Cambridge\, taking in the streets\, alleys\, buildings and history of the people living in the area between St John’s College and Quayside — the centre of trade that made the town a thriving inland port long before the first students arrived — before crossing the river to Castle Hill and the location of the Roman settlement of Duroliponte\, the 2\,000 year-old forerunner of the city we know today. \nThe 90-minute tour will end at the Museum of Cambridge. While it may not resemble a Greek temple\, this small\, independent museum located in a former coaching inn has a big story to share. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Hiraeth
DESCRIPTION:Hiraeth is an ‘untranslatable’ Welsh word conveying a sense of deep longing for a home which you cannot return to\, or which maybe never was.  \nIts closest English equivalent would be ‘homesickness’\, but it’s closer to the Portuguese saudade or the Russian toska. \nThe word was the inspiration for a project supported by the student volunteering organisation Cambridge Hub\, exploring how different groups of people relate to home and belonging in Cambridge and how we map our memories in relation to place and material. \nIn the summer of 2019\, the Hiraeth Project particularly focused on migrant memories\, and the challenges of constructing a home and identity in the context of displacement. The work from this fantastic project will be on display at the Museum of Cambridge in a unique exhibition related to these stories and memories. \nThe exhibition will explore how different groups of people relate to home and belonging in Cambridge\, through audio recordings of participants talking about places in the city\, maps of the city they drew from memory\, alongside photos and further information about the project. There will also be the opportunity for visitors to the exhibition to contribute their own memories to a collective map of Cambridge\, both as part of the exhibition and during a participatory mapping workshop on the 9th November\, as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences.

DESCRIPTION:This small exhibition shows some of the wonderful collection of children’s books that have been gathered by the Museum since its formation in 1936. \nThis selection is taken from just 2 of our many book boxes.  \nWe have chosen the books to represent a cross section of children’s fiction from the late 19th and 20th centuries.  During this time new publishing techniques enabled books to be produced in large numbers for an ever enthusiastic public. Compulsory schooling for all in 1880 also increased the literacy of the young. \nWe also show the wonderful sketch books of Cissy Macfarlane-Grieves whose early death prevented her recognition as a significant artist. \n  \n

While it may not resemble a Greek temple\, this small\, independent museum located in a former coaching inn has a big story to share. DESCRIPTION:Join us on International Women’s Day for special tours and workshops that will take a closer look at the Women\, Unity\, Strength exhibition.\n\n\nEvents throughout the day will be:\n\n\n\nDrawing with Scissors with Jane Hellings\, 11.30am – 12.30pm \nTour the Museum exhibits with artist Jane Hellings and\, using only scissors and paper\, make images of Museum Artefacts which speak to you of Women’s Struggle and Emancipation. You will retire to the Enid Porter Room with our cut outs and turn them into mini articulated placards\, which could be used on Jill Eastland’s Women’s Protest Tour of the Museum (below)\, or at any other Women’s March you find yourself on. \nWrite a Haiku or Two Tour with Cathy Dunbar\, 1.30pm – 2.30pm \nWith artist Cathy Dunbar\, tour around the current exhibition Women Unity Strength and the museum collection\, where we will share knowledge and memories of the objects in relation to women’s strength and determination for equality and independence. \nWe will then repair to the Enid Porter room and create many Haikus based on our thoughts and observations. Your poems will be displayed with the objects in the museum. \nHaiku; a traditional Japanese poem structure using only 17 syllables in 3 lines\, 5-7-5\, evoking the senses and nature. Expressing much\, suggesting more\, in the fewest words. \nNo previous experience needed. \nProtest March and Singing Tour with Jill Eastland\, 3.00pm – 4.00pm \nArtist and activist Jill Eastland will be leading a protest tour of the museum’s collection and the current exhibition\, “Women\, Unity\, Strength”  We will share knowledge about the history of women’s protests and current campaigns\, sing protest songs and chants\, discuss creative activism and devise our own protests. \n\n\n\nFree. \nAll tours are drop in. Please arrive early to ensure you get a place. \n
