SUMMARY:March Walking Tour: Hidden Cambridge and the Museum of Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Journey through the streets of Hidden Cambridge to the Museum of Cambridge \nA walking tour for local residents who have always meant to explore the side streets and alleyways but never quite had the time\, as well as for visitors to our city who want to discover more of Cambridge beyond King’s Parade. \nJoin us as we explore Hidden Cambridge\, taking in the streets\, alleys\, buildings and history of the people living in the area between St John’s College and Quayside — the centre of trade that made the town a thriving inland port long before the first students arrived — before crossing the river to Castle Hill and the location of the Roman settlement of Duroliponte\, the 2\,000 year-old forerunner of the city we know today. \nThe 90-minute tour will start outside the Main Entrance to St John’s College and end at the Museum of Cambridge. While it may not resemble a Greek temple\, this small\, independent museum located in a former coaching inn has a big story to share. Suffused with the history of the local people of Cambridge\, it contains an eclectic collection of everyday objects used in day-to-day life\, from vacuum cleaners and washing machines to false teeth and mantraps! \nThe tour will be led by a Cambridge Badged Guide\, who will give their time for free – reflecting their high regard for both the Museum of Cambridge and the local history of our city. \nTickets are available at £10.00 per person\, which includes an annual pass to the Museum\, from the Visit Cambridge website. \nChildren under 12 years of age can attend for free when accompanied by an adult. \nThe Round ChurchPortugal PlaceThrough the Door of St Peter’sThe Hawks’ Club

SUMMARY:Cambridge Talks: Pickwick's Cambridge Scrapbook
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second of our Cambridge Talks\, a series of events raising funds for the Museum of Cambridge’s fundraising appeal #YourMuseumNeedsYou. \nWhen Samuel Pickwick visited Cambridge in 1838 he compiled a scrapbook of the folk he met and the things he saw. When he left\, his scrapbook remained\, and through Pickwick’s eyes we will explore Dickensian-era Cambridge. \nIn this talk\, Mike will be exploring some of what Pickwick’s imagined scrapbook might reveal of the Castle Hill area and the surrounds in the late 1830s. \nMike Petty is an eminent local historian of the city of Cambridge and the surrounding area. Founder of the Cambridgeshire Collection\, Mike has became the most widely acknowledged authority on Cambridge and the fenland\, building up a unique knowledge of resources which he continues to share through regular lectures to groups and societies. \nHis wide experience in assisting thousands of enquirers for over 50 years and unrivalled knowledge of published material – books\, newspapers\, illustrations\, maps etc – combine to provide a unique service for those investigating any aspect of the area\, past or present. More details are contained on his website. \nYou can learn more about Cambridge’s history from the comfort of your home by visiting Cambridgeshire History on your Computer: the Library on your Laptop and The Cambridgeshire Scrapbook which summarises thousands of articles on Cambridge’s history. If you’re a Facebook user\, you can also join the Fenland History on Facebook group. \n  \nAll proceeds from this event will go towards the Museum of Cambridge’s fundraising appeal #YourMuseumNeedsYou\, which aims to help us overcome the huge financial blow dealt by the Covid-19 pandemic.    \nWe want to say a huge thank you to all our supporters who have helped us over the last few weeks and months. SUMMARY:Cambridge Talks: Stories of the early Bangladeshi settlers in Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us our Cambridge Talks\, a series of events raising funds for the Museum of Cambridge’s fundraising appeal #YourMuseumNeedsYou. \n  \nShahida will be talking about the early settlers from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in Cambridge\, her father being one of them. \nThey arrived at a time when the country was recovering after the Second World War – the period of post-war immigration. Discover the fascinating Bengali history and heritage. \nShahida is an author and writer of Bangladeshi heritage\, born and raised in Cambridge. She writes historical fiction\, non-fiction and children’s stories and has contributed widely to print and online publications\, such as the Huffington Post UK as well as to BBC Radio. Her first historical novel is ‘Lascar’. Shahida is also a trustee of Cambridge Central Mosque\, (Europe’s first eco-mosque)\, the Karim Foundation and an advisor to the trustees of the Museum of Cambridge.
