SUMMARY:Exhibition: Safeguards Against Witchcraft
DESCRIPTION:We have extended Safeguards Against Witchcraft until Sunday 25 March 2018\, to take account of our temporary closure for spring cleaning during the month of January \nFor centuries\, builders and homeowners secreted spiritual middens\, such as shoes\, bones and witch bottles\, in the walls\, fireplaces and under the floors in order to protect their property\, their kin and themselves from the forces of witchcraft. \nUsing  some rarely displayed objects from our own collection\, we are exploring the customs and traditions that guarded Cambridgeshire homes against evil intent. We are also collecting your stories about any finds that you may have made during renovations and building work\, in order to further our understanding of local traditions in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. \nWhat should you do if a witch tries to enter your house? Read our blog to find out more \nThis exhibition is part of Tracing Traditions\, a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and delivered by the Museums Association

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Accept My Love: a Display of Courtship Tokens for St. Valentine's Day
DESCRIPTION:Before the advent of St. Valentine’s Day cards\, expressions of love in the Fenland villages came in sweet but rather unusual guises \nYoung men would make tokens of affection from local plants and flowers\, tie them with a true-lovers’ knot and then give them to a sweetheart as a proposal of marriage – often without the exchange of a single word. Others might consult with a local wise woman and obtain love potions made with dragon’s blood… And\, if such overtures were ignored\, there were also rituals performed in the light of a full moon that could win a person  the attention they desire. \nMany courtship practices have been forgotten or superseded by greetings cards and other modern contrivances\, but you can learn about some of them in our special Valentine’s Day Exhibition\, hosted in our Fens and Fenland Room \nThis exhibition is part of Tracing Traditions\, a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and delivered by the Museums Association

SUMMARY:Talk: Bags of Yarn
DESCRIPTION:Discover the joys of creating beautiful and practical things from recycled materials\nCambridge textile artist Jenny Langley will explore how working with recycled materials feeds her creativity and inspires her to try new and different ideas. \n“It lead me to a deep appreciation of all the good things that I have in my life\, so I’m much happier with my lot than I used to be. No more striving to get what I haven’t got\, as ”ve already got great riches. I now treat everything as precious\, and I feel that that’s a really good way to look at the world.” \nJenny will tell us the story of how she came to work with recycled materials\, her techniques and what you will need to start to creating your very own things. She will also bring some fabrics to share with those who are eager to get start immediately. \nYou can find more of Jenny’s work at Art Textiles \nWe’ll be collecting your thoughts and ideas about recycling and how to make the best of pre-own materials as part of our Capturing Cambridge project

SUMMARY:Activity: Raptor Day at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Ever seen a peregrine falcon or a tawny owl up close? \nWell now is your chance\, because we have invited some of these magnificent birds\, along with their keepers\, to visit the Museum for the afternoon. \nRaptors are predatory birds that hunt and feed on rodents and other small animals. For centuries\, some species were used as hunting birds because of their keen vision\, powerful talons and sharp beaks. Others were regarded as a threat or a menace. Join us as members of the Raptor Foundation talk about their birds in real life and in local folklore and find out which of the raptor family was once commonly thought to be a witch in disguise! \nWe know that this will be an eagerly anticipated event\, so we are running three 50-minute session during the afternoon\, in order to accommodate as many visitors as possible. You can reserve free places for a session below. \nPlease do not book for multiple sessions. we want as many visitors as possible to be able to take part. If you do\, we reserve the right to cancel all your bookings. \nThe Raptor Foundation is a local organisation based near Huntingdon that exists to protect\, rescue and rehabilitate hawks\, falcons\, owls and other raptors. You can experience a variety of birds up close at their sanctuary and even fly some during daily flight displays. The Foundation runs regular talks and hands-on sessions that include other residents including snakes\, reptiles and meerkats.More information is available from the Raptor Foundation website. \n\nThis activity is part of Tracing Traditions\, a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and delivered by the Museums Association

SUMMARY:Talk: Safeguards Against Witchcraft - Local Protective Practices
DESCRIPTION:Expanding the narrative of our current exhibition Safeguards Against Witchcraft\, this session will explore more stories of the protective practices used by the people of Cambridge and Cambridgeshire \nWitches\, warlocks and magic were once a part of everyday life\, provoking fear and trepidation throughout the late Medieval and Early Modern periods. \nSo great was the perceived threat that practising witchcraft became a capital offence in Great Britain during the sixteenth century. Suspicion gripped the people of East Anglia and witch-hunts and the brutal trials of local women\, as well as their families\, became commonplace. \nAlice Samuel\, a resident of the village of Warboys\, became national news when Lady Cromwell fell ill and subsequently died after meeting her\, confirming the locals’ suspicions of witchcraft. Alice and her family were taken to trial and hanged in Huntingdon. \nWhile the violence arising from the witch mania that consumed the country is well known\, the steps taken by individuals to protect their homes\, their kin and themselves are often overlooked. There was so much that could be done to stop a witch from causing harm and all that was needed was a single\, worn shoe… \nJoin us in the Dining Parlour at our Museum on Monday 19 March to learn more \nThis talk is part of Tracing Traditions\, a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and delivered by the Museums Association

SUMMARY:Exhibition: All in a Cave of Snow - the Strange Tale of Elizabeth Woodcock
DESCRIPTION:If your curiosity is piqued by the extraordinary\, then we have quite a tale to tell you \nCome visit and discover more about the remarkable Elizabeth Woodcock\, a resident of the village of Impington who survived for nearly eight days in a cave of snow after a fall from her horse on a tempestuous evening in February 1799. \nBased around contemporary accounts\, our exhibition uses objects from our own collection to illustrate Elizabeth’s tremendous fortitude\, as she struggled to survive in her icy cavern with just an almanac\, a snuff box\, a nutcracker\, a red handkerchief and a shoe. We will also explore the obsolete and rather alarming medicinal treatments that she endured after she was found. \nHer amazing survival story spread across the county and then countrywide and many flocked to her with gifts that included bountiful amounts of liquor. Such generous quantities of alcohol – both from well-wishers and from doctors – may well have accelerated her declining health and caused her death just five months later in July. \nPerhaps it might be said that Elizabeth died as a result of kindness… \nVisit our blog and discover the link between Elizabeth\, a common item of clothing and a famous nursery rhyme. \nThis exhibition is part of Tracing Traditions\, a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and delivered by the Museums Association

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Mary Charlotte Greene - Streets\, Inns\, Yards and Courts of Cambridge\, 1894 - 1950
DESCRIPTION:  We are pleased to announce that we are extending the exhibition for a further fortnight   \n“Cambridge had called me to it and I love the place” \nBorn in 1860 in Takeley\, Essex\, Mary Charlotte Greene had a passion for painting from a young age. She studied at the Colarossi Academy in Paris\, while staying with her sister Helen\, before training at the Royal Academy in London. \nHer initial dismay at a family decision to live in Harston\, Cambridgeshire\, grew into a love of the village\, the surrounding countryside and the nearby town of Cambridge. Working from a studio in a side road off St Andrew’s Street\, she became a prominent member of the Cambridge Drawing Society and served as its President from 1926-29. \nHer early work captures many of the streetscapes\, buildings\, inns\, yards\, and courts of Cambridge that were demolished during the growth and modernisation of the town in the early part of the last century. \nRead more about Mary Charlotte Greene and how she influenced the artist and wood engraver Gwen Raverat on our blog pages for April. \nJoin us in the Dining Parlour at our Museum from 30 March to view drawings\, watercolours\, oil paintings and prints from our Mary Charlotte Greene Collection and explore her unique record of the history and development of our city.\n \nThis exhibition is part of Capturing Cambridge\, a project funded by Cambridge City Council.

SUMMARY:Activity: Heroines\, Highwaymen and Hereward the Wake: Tales from the Fens
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Cambridgeshire had its own Robin Hood? \nInspiration for the quintessential English hero is said to come from Hereward the Wake\, a rebellious and somewhat frightful man who roamed the Fens and rallied the people to oppose William the Conqueror during the 11th century. \nHereward became a local hero. Many incredible and often farfetched tales were told about him for hundreds of years after his death. The alehouses and inns of the county were filled with songs of his adventures. \nWhile he is not forgotten today\, like many other such heroes his story has faded from popular culture. \nHeroines\, Highwaymen and Hereward the Wake: Tales from the Fens is a craft and storytelling workshop led by puppet maker and animator Heather Colbert. \nJoin us and help to recount the tales of extraordinary local personalities using puppets that you will make during the session. We will be recording the performance and sharing it on our website for others to learn about these legendary characters. \nHeroines\, Highwaymen and Hereward the Wake: Tales from the Fens is suitable for children aged 7-15. Materials will be provided. \nTickets are free\, but you must book so that we can manage attendance. \nThis activity is part of Tracing Traditions\, a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and delivered by the Museums Association

SUMMARY:Talk: From Football to Cricket - the Development of Sport in Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:No one can doubt the impact that the University of Cambridge has had on so many facets of our city and our lives\, but few people realise that this includes many sports and games. Even fewer know of the influential role played by the town as well as the gown. \nNigel Fenner will explore the mid-nineteenth century history of sport in the city\, when the rules of modern-day football were first codified\, the Cambridgeshire county cricket team was one of the strongest in the country and local tobacconist and right-arm fast bowler Francis Phillips Fenner was establishing the cricket ground that still carries his name. \nDescended from Francis Phillips Fenner\, Nigel played fly-half to Gareth Edwards in an Old Boys Rugby Match at his school. While studying at the University of Cambridge he represented Downing College at rugby\, cricket\, tennis\, squash and rowing\, for which he won his oar at the May Bumps. He also played football for the University and secured his ‘Blue’ in a game against the University of Oxford at Wembley Stadium. Nigel played for Arsenal Youth and\, for four years\, was the pre-season fitness trainer to Ian Botham and the Somerset County Cricket Club squad. \nHe runs Cambridge Sports Tours. \n\n \nThis talk is part of Tracing Traditions\, a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and delivered by the Museums Association

SUMMARY:Talk: Send Her Victorious
DESCRIPTION:Cambridge is no stranger to a royal celebration and the sheer scale of some has been remarkable \nWith arrangements for this month’s royal wedding well underway\, valued Friend of the Museum Tamsin Wimhurst takes us back 180 years to the preparations for another major royal event: the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Victoria on 28 June 1838. \nConscious that this was to be event of a lifetime\, the great and the good of Cambridge conceived of a celebration that would involve more than 20\,000 townspeople. They had ambition\, they had enthusiasm and they knew how to plan and organise. All they had to do was to unveil their spectacular scheme and keep their fingers crossed that the unpredictable English weather would be kind to them. \nSend Her Victorious compliments our current exhibition A Loyal Toast. \nThis talk is part of Tracing Traditions\, a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund and delivered by the Museums Association

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Cambridge Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:EXTENDED DUE TO DEMAND\nCome and see pictures from the Museum of Cambridge collections paired with photographs of the same locations as they appear today\, taken by students of Cambridgeshire Regional College \nStudents studying Visual Communications at Cambridge Regional College have trawled the photographic archives at the Museum and selected from a wide range of subjects in and around Cambridge. \nEach has chosen three images that depict places across Cambridgeshire and then recaptured them in their modern context. The exhibition explores change\, displaying each of the original archival images alongside its modern counterpart\, as interpreted by the students. \nA selection of contemporary images of locations that the students could not use because they no longer exist will also be on display. It’s a unique opportunity to explore Cambridge of the past through the eyes of present-day residents. \nCambridge Then and Now  will run in the Dining Parlour throughout the month of June.

SUMMARY:Event: Castle Hill Open Day - Wobbly Goings-on at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of frolics\, laughter and fun on Saturday 21 July \nCome and explore one of the oldest\, most vibrant and interesting parts of the city of Cambridge as many of the venues in the area open their doors to visitors for the afternoon for Castle Hill Open Day 2018. \nThere’ll be events aplenty and something for every everyone from 12:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturday 21 July. \nJoin us here at the Museum of Cambridge as we explore the history of jelly with Sue Bailey – our very own Fanny Cradock – and find out how combining food and science can lead to loads of wobbly\, fruit-flavoured fun in our practical demonstrations throughout the afternoon. \nFanny will tell us the history of jelly and about the copper and china jelly moulds on display in our collection. She’ll be making jellies in retro aluminium bunny rabbit jelly moulds\, so familiar to children of the 1960s and 1970s\, as well as testing modern day jelly moulds\, courtesy of Tala. \nYou can even get involved yourself! Make your own fabulously-coloured\, quick-setting agar jelly balls\, see who can make the tallest tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti and create your very own vision of Cambridge in the the year 2196. \nWe’re looking forward to seeing you there! \nDr Sue Bailey works as a food historian\, food science lecturer and consultant. She has over 25 years of experience in food and education as lead for food communications and food science degree courses at London Metropolitan University. \nA guest on Channel Four’s Great British Bake Off\, Sue showed presenter Sandi Toksvig how to make a Cambridge Pudding. She is a frequent expert contributor to Channel Four’s Food Unwrapped\, BBC One’s Rip Off Britain food exposes and ITV’s Save Money Good Health. \nSue regularly appears in the guise of the colourful and fabulously waspish Fanny Cradock\, combining demonstrations of retro 1960s and 1970s party recipes with an exploration of the chef’s influential role as an early television celebrity gourmand. Fanny was keen to encourage children to get into the fun of cooking and trying different foods and Sue carries on her campaign with gusto!
