SUMMARY:Talk: Clara Dorothea Rackham Socialist\, Suffragist\, Social Reformer
DESCRIPTION:Mary Joannou\, Emeritus Professor of Literary History and Women’s Writing at ARU\, talks to us about Cambridge activist Clara Rackham.\nJoin the Museum of Cambridge for an evening talk with Mary Joannou. Mary will talk about Clara Dorothea Rackham\, Socialist\, Suffragist\, Social Reformer. \nMary writes: ‘I was privileged to be the first person allowed access to Clara’s unpublished family papers to write my new biography (Routledge 2022) of this amazing woman who fought passionately for women’s rights\, for colonial freedom\, against rural poverty\, and for persons displaced by war and hunger\, never allowing herself to despair or lose hope during the most dreadful and dispiriting of times’. \n‘I find Clara’s tireless commitment to the struggle for penal reform\, women in local government\, support for the unemployed\, and workers’ education an inspiration. I focus on her as one of the generation of feminists who lived through two World Wars and helped to create the Welfare State and explain how and why Cambridge would not be the city it is today without her’. \nPhoto credit: Cambridgeshire Collection \nMary Joannou \nMary Joannou is Emerita Professor at Anglia Ruskin University and attached to the Labour History Research Unit. She is the author of 50 peer reviewed articles in books and journals\, editor of vol 8 of the Palgrave History of British Women’s Writing and four scholarly monographs\, most recently Women’s Writing\, Englishness and Cultural Identity: In 2018 she was the founder member of CAMVOTE100 responsible for the public commemoration of the centenary of votes for women in Cambridge and beyond and has been closely involved with the erection of the Blue Plaques for Millicent Garrett Fawcett\, Leah Manning and Clara Rackham. \nAccessibility \nYou can also read about our accessibility information on our website. If you’d like to chat through any accessibility requirements\, don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01223 355159 or email annie.davis@museumofcambridge.org.uk. SUMMARY:Talk: The Future of Historic Landscapes: The Limits To 'Re-Wilding'
DESCRIPTION:Tim Williamson\, landscape historian at the University of East Anglia\, talks to us about the future of nature in historic landscapes and the limits to ‘rewilding’. \n\nIs re-wilding the best way of restoring nature to the English countryside? \nWhat negative effects might this have on the cultural\, historic landscape? \nWhat do we mean by ‘nature’ and ‘natural’ anyway? \n\nThis talk will examine current debates in nature conservation from an historical perspective. \nTom Williamson \nTom Williamson is a landscape historian and landscape archaeologist with wide-ranging interests. His recent research projects have included a GIS-aided study of Agriculture and the Landscape in Midland England\, funded by the AHRC; and investigations of the history of tree populations and tree disease in England since 1600\, funded by the AHRC\, DEFRA\, and the Woodland Trust. He currently leads an HLF-funded project studying the history and ecology of orchards in eastern England (‘Orchards East’); and works with Chris Scull and others on a study of the important Anglo-Saxon site at Rendlesham in Suffolk\, funded by the Leverhulme Trust. He also researches designed landscapes\, especially parks and gardens of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries\, and is currently involved with the Gardens Trusts of Hertfordshire and Norfolk in researching the work of the designer Humphry Repton in these two counties. He teaches courses on landscape history at undergraduate and MA level\, and supervises MPhil and PhD students researching a variety of subjects related to landscape history\, agricultural history\, and the history of landscape design. \nVirtual Events \nThis talk will take place on Zoom. On the day of the talk\, we’ll send you a Zoom link and a password which will allow you acces to the talk. All you’ll need is a laptop or mobile phone and an internet connection. \nAccessibility \nIf there’s anything we can do to make this virtual event more accessible\, please do let us know – email annie.davis@museumofcambridge.org.uk or call 01223 355159 for a chat. \nLove events? SUMMARY:Talk: Power Of Diverse Community Engagement

SUMMARY:Mugs\, Medals and a Meal for 15\,000: A People's History of Coronations in Cambridgeshire
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Museum of Cambridge from May to July to see never before displayed items of Cambridgeshire’s coronation history. The people of Cambridge and Cambridgeshire have been celebrating special royal moments in style since the coronation of Queen Victoria’s feast for 15\,000 people on Parker’s Piece in 1838. \nEra-defining objects from the Museum’s stores will be on display\, some for the very first time. On display will be pictures\, pamphlets and memorabilia from six royal coronations –most have never been on display at the Museum before. \nThis exhibit will explore royal moments in the city of Cambridge and the county of Cambridgeshire alongside objects that have come to define local communities’ connection with the royal family. Visitors will have the chance to see how Cambridge has celebrated\, marked\, mourned\, and changed since Queen Victoria was crowned in 1838. \n“Mugs\, Medals and a Meal for 15\,000” encourages visitors to reflect on how Cambridgeshire has celebrated coronations and royal events\, from hot air balloon rides to feasts and commemorative mugs and medals. \n“Mugs\, Medals and a Meal for 15\,000” will be on display until mid-July\, when it will be followed by “Agatha Christie: An exhibition about her life and characters” from July 17 to August 28 2023.
