SUMMARY:Talk and Signing: Cambridge Women and the Struggle for the Vote
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Cambridge was at the forefront of the struggles for women’s rights to vote a century ago? \n\nMillicent Fawcett\, the national leader of the non-militant Suffragists and arguably one of the most influential women in Britain during the last 100 years\, was a city resident and founded the Cambridge Women’s Suffrage Association. What’s more\, leading militant Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst spoke at a number of riotous rallies and meetings. \nAuthor Sue Slack has researched the role of Cambridge women in the struggle for voting rights\, from the late 19th century to 1918 Act that granted suffrage to women over the age 30 and on to equal voting rights in 1928. Alongside many familiar names are accounts of many others who fought for rights that we take for granted today. \nJoin us in the Enid Porter Room from 2:00pm – 4:00pm on Saturday 15 September to find out more about the local women who contributed to the Great War and protested against it\, founded local groups for the Women’s Institute and Girl Guides\, led developments in eduction and welfare\, and became the first female MPs\, barristers\, magistrates and surgeons.

SUMMARY:Activity: A Visit to View the Newnham College Suffrage Artefacts
DESCRIPTION:“Better is Wisdom than Weapons of War” \nA rare opportunity to view some of the unique items that comprise the Newnham College collection\nJoin us on a visit to Newnham College to see their acclaimed suffrage banner. First seen during a procession organised by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies on 13 June 1908\, the magnificent standard was designed by Mary Lowndes and realised by students from Newnham and Girton Colleges. It was subsequently used in protests and processions until 1913. \nThe visit will include a chance to see items donated by the artist and collector Christiana Herringham (1852-1929)\, an early benefactor of the college and an influential suffrage campaigner\, who bequeathed a significant collection of European and oriental textiles and furniture along with examples of her own paintings in egg tempera and watercolour. \nTextiles expert Carolyn Ferguson will be present to explain about the design and production of the banner. \nWith only eight tickets in total available\, this is an opportunity not to miss. \nTickets are available from Eventbrite at a cost of £3.00 each. The tour will start at 2:00pm from the Porter’s Lodge at Newnham College

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Barnwell at War
DESCRIPTION:The everyday lives of working-class people in the east of Cambridge during the Great War \nShowcasing research by 100 Years of Coconuts. \nWhile tales of the staff and students of the University of Cambridge during the First World War are commonplace\, stories of the working class people of the city — many of whom served the dons and scholars before departing for the Front — are more difficult to find. What’s more\, the experiences of those who remained at home have been all but ignored. \nBarnwell at War  is a collaboration between local researchers\, Wolfson College and the Everyday Lives in War First World War Engagement Centre at the University of Hertfordshire\, funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council\, that seeks to redress the balance by exploring cultural memories of part of Cambridge that is usually well beyond the gaze of tourists\, examining changes to patterns of life during an era of previously unparalleled trauma. \nA six-week exhibition\, to be held the Dining Parlour of the Museum of Cambridge. Entrance fees are included in our admission price; concessions apply.

SUMMARY:Talk: Growing Up and Getting On in the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:Three stories of education and everyday life \nWhat was life like for ordinary people who were born in East Anglia and the East Midlands just after the Second World War? How did the expansion of secondary education\, new work opportunities\, and social change affect their aspirations and identities? \nDr Laura Carter will examine the experience of growing up in the region using three local life stories that have been reconstructed from information derived from the 1946 British Birth Cohort — a longitudinal study that has followed more than 5\,000 postwar babies from cradle to old-age. \nAlong the way she will also explore the impact of the 1944 Education Act and the effect that universal secondary education had on ordinary people living and working in rural communities across the eastern counties as they left school\, went to work\, and had children of their own during the 1960s. \nThis is a free event\, but you must book so that we can manage attendance \nDr Laura CarterDr Laura Carter‘s research focuses on education\, everyday life\, and social change in Britain during the twentieth century. Her PhD was an examination of popular British social history from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with a particular focus on the way that ordinary people learnt about history through books\, in schools\, in museums\, and via broadcast radio. She is currently working on her first book\, which is provisionally entitled Histories of Everyday Life: The Making of Popular Social History in Britain\, 1918-1979. \nLaura works as a postdoctoral researcher on Secondary Education and Social Change in the United Kingdom since 1945\, an Economic and Social Research Council-funded project that explores the ways in which the advent of mass\, compulsory education after 1945 affected individual and class identities\, and intersected with other processes of social change in late-twentieth century Britain. \nShe is a Research Fellow of Murray Edwards College\, University of Cambridge

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Pride & Place: An LGBTQ+ Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhat is the Museum of Cambridge doing for LGBTQ+ History Month? \nWe’re hosting a special community curated exhibition. \nActivism is a key theme of LGBTQ+ history month in 2019\, a year that marks the fiftieth anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York (spearheaded by black and Latina trans activists)\, which energised the movement for LGBTQ+ rights and inspired the first Pride March – Cambridge aims to hold its first Pride March in 2019. One of the basic notions of activism is that greater visibility leads to change. \nPride & Place: An LGBTQ+ Exhibition highlights activists in many guises\, both gay and straight\, that shaped the history of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights – from the overtly political\, to the intellectuals and authors whose lives and work suggested a path to a more inclusive world\, to what we could call accidental activists created in flashpoints of opposition\, as well as grassroots groups the LGBTQ+ community here\, in Cambridge\, today. \nThe exhibition also highlights episodes in the wider LGBTQ+ social history of the city and explores the nature of the community\, through its community spaces\, individual experiences and some of the support networks that presently exist. \nWe aim to start a conversation so come along and share your thoughts with us – you’ll have a bit more time now as we’ve extended the exhibition to Sunday 7 April. \n
