DESCRIPTION:  \nUPDATE: The Museum is currently closed in accordance with the latest Covid-19 rules\nFORGE: pop-up exhibition 19th December 2020 – 8th February 2021 \nThe Museum of Cambridge play host to a multimedia exhibition inspired by the history of Ironworks \nThe FORGE exhibition presents a thought-provoking look and celebration of how the community has flourished through rediscovering and making new connections with local heritage\, nature and traditions. FORGE will take you on a journey through the museum to explore artefacts from the past to the present-day. The display highlights how the revival and sharing of these traditions and crafts over the past year has given us hope and helped to inspire a kinder future. \nInspired by the people and history of Sturton Town\, Ironworks and Mill Road\, FORGE has been conceived by Ironworks artist-in-residence Hilary Cox Condron and co-curated with community historian Helen Weinstein\, local residents and The Museum of Cambridge. \nCome along to the Museum of Cambridge between the 19th December 2020 and the 8th February 2021 and see the FORGE installations throughout the museum. The exhibitions and digital displays will shed new light on the former occupants of the homes around Ironworks and how the area’s past has informed the artworks that will feature within the public spaces being created as part of the new homes being built. \nThroughout the exhibition will be a series of online events and workshops for audiences to delve a little deeper into some of the presentations\, for a full list and up-to-date information please visit www.resonance-cambridge.co.uk/forge. \nPlease note that there is a maximum of 18 visitors in the museum at any time. \nOpening Times \nThursdays to Saturdays 1pm \n1st Sunday of the month 12pm-4pm \nThere is no need to book your visit and tickets can be purchased at the Museum. \nHoliday Opening Hours \nThe Museum will be closed for the bank holidays on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th December and Friday 1st January. The Museum has added an additional opening day on Wednesday 30th December 12pm-5pm. \nPlease note that there is a maximum of 18 visitors in the museum at any time and entrance fee. SUMMARY:Hidden Cambridge Walking Tour (January)
DESCRIPTION:Journey through the streets of Hidden Cambridge \nA group of qualified guides are once again offering walking tours of the oldest part of the city\, generously donating the proceeds to support the Museum of Cambridge. \nIt’s a tour for local residents who have always meant to explore the side streets and alleyways but never quite had the time\, as well as for visitors who want to discover more of Cambridge beyond King’s Parade. \nDiscover the heart of the ancient city\, some of the hidden nooks and crannies you’ve never noticed before around the river crossing and quayside area – traces of the Roman settlement\, the Norman castle\, the Saxon and Viking trading centre and the medieval town. Hear stories of beer\, brothels and boatmen! Nobel prizes jostle with rugby players and mustard factories. \nThe tour is subject to COVID-19 regulations in place at the time\, and the groups will be small and conducted in a safe way. \nFor booking visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/90-minute-hidden-cambridge-walking-tour-2021-tickets-126185380871. Booking is not required for accompanied children aged 12 and under. They also get free entrance to the museum. \nMeet at 10.30am outside the Round Church on Bridge Street. Each tour lasts about 90 minutes and the cost of £15 a head includes a year’s free entry to the Museum. This small\, independent museum\, located in the former White Horse Inn\, has a big story to share. Suffused with the history of the local people of Cambridge\, it contains an eclectic collection of everyday objects used in day-to-day life\, from vacuum cleaners and washing machines to false teeth and mantraps! SUMMARY:Cambridge Talks: Pickwick's Cambridge Scrapbook
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second of our Cambridge Talks\, a series of events raising funds for the Museum of Cambridge’s fundraising appeal #YourMuseumNeedsYou. \nWhen Samuel Pickwick visited Cambridge in 1838 he compiled a scrapbook of the folk he met and the things he saw. When he left\, his scrapbook remained\, and through Pickwick’s eyes we will explore Dickensian-era Cambridge. \nIn this talk\, Mike will be exploring some of what Pickwick’s imagined scrapbook might reveal of the Castle Hill area and the surrounds in the late 1830s. \nMike Petty is an eminent local historian of the city of Cambridge and the surrounding area. Founder of the Cambridgeshire Collection\, Mike has became the most widely acknowledged authority on Cambridge and the fenland\, building up a unique knowledge of resources which he continues to share through regular lectures to groups and societies. \nHis wide experience in assisting thousands of enquirers for over 50 years and unrivalled knowledge of published material – books\, newspapers\, illustrations\, maps etc – combine to provide a unique service for those investigating any aspect of the area\, past or present.
