DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Cambridge is excited to launch our new exhibit\, “Cars\, Carriages and the Cam: Navigating your way in Cambridge”\, set to open on Wednesday 8th of November in our Attic Gallery! \nDiscover Cambridge’s history of trams\, trains\, carriages and ferries in a new exhibit discussing the memories and controversies of transport in Cambridge. From Thomas Hobson to the first community bike scheme in Cambridge\, the exhibit explores the ever-changing face of Cambridge travel and transport. You’ll have the chance to see how Cambridge has wrestled with travel in the city\, explore modern protests\, Victorian satire and the controversial arrival of the train station to Cambridge city. \n“Cars\, Carriages and the Cam: Navigating your way in Cambridge” will be open from the 8th of November 2023 until March 2024. \nThe Museum is open Monday\, Wednesday-Saturday 10-5pm and Sundays 11-4pm. Adult admission is £6\, and Student/Jobseeker admission is £4.5 to support us\, an independent Museum and charity. Entry to the exhibit is included in your entry ticket. Children 16 and under visit for free.

SUMMARY:The Golden Years of Clara Rackham: Socialist\, Suffragist\, Social Reformer
DESCRIPTION:After her widely acclaimed talk in March\, 2023 Emerita Professor Mary Joannou\, Emerita Professor at ARU and author of the first biography of Clara Rackham\, returns to discuss Clara’s ‘golden years’. Using rare archival photographs\, Mary’s richly illustrated presentation traces Clara’s work in Cambridge during the ‘People’s War’ and after the Labour Landslide of 1945 including the new housing programmes in the city and the great international crises of Suez\, Cuba and Hungary.  \n The talk combines Clara’s experiences of ageing\, disability\, bereavement and personal loss with the pleasure she derived from her extended family\, her support of CND and the peace movement and the controversial national campaign for the retention of grammar schools. What emerges is not only a picture of a tireless city and county councillor who helped to change the face of modern Cambridge\, but also of a very modest ‘private person’ and impassioned feminist public intellectual\, still politically active at the age of ninety\, whose work was instrumental to the establishment of the postwar settlement and the Welfare State.  \nAccessibility  \nYou can also read about our accessibility information on our website. Create scenery and characters of a Pollock theatre\, inspired by the one on display in the Museum’s Childhood Room. This hands-on craft will take place on Sunday 21st\, Saturday 27th of January and Sunday 4th of February. \nFind out about the history of the Pollock theatres and how they were made. Learn about local legend Elizabeth Woodcock\, who got lost for eight days in a snowstorm in 1799. Be inspired by her remarkable story as we guide you through the creation of scenery and characters to bring her story to life. This event is suitable for ages 6 and above with an accompanying adult. SUMMARY:Talk: The Railways of Cambridge: 1845 to the Present Day
DESCRIPTION:In this illustrated talk Tony Kirby will explore how the railways have influenced the townscape of Cambridge from 1845 to the present day\, the history of Cambridge station itself and its surroundings\, how trams and then buses have connected it to the town centre and show some of the immense variety of trains and locomotives (steam\, diesel and electric) that have been seen here over the years. \nTony Kirby taught History at CCAT/Anglia Ruskin University from 1970 onwards\, and was latterly the University’s Co-ordinator of Strategic Planning. DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Cambridge and let your creativity take centre stage with our family toy theatre-making activity. Create scenery and characters of a Pollock theatre\, inspired by the one on display in the Museum’s Childhood Room. This hands-on craft will take place on Sunday 21st\, Saturday 27th of January and Sunday 4th of February. \nFind out about the history of the Pollock theatres and how they were made. Learn about local legend Elizabeth Woodcock\, who got lost for eight days in a snowstorm in 1799. Be inspired by her remarkable story as we guide you through the creation of scenery and characters to bring her story to life. This event is suitable for ages 6 and above with an accompanying adult. You will learn about the history of the White Horse Inn to Leach pub signs\, from Napoleon invading(!) to traffic lights. It will conjure up images of people dropping in for a pint at the magnificent old inn building\, and consider the burning issues of the day they may have been discussing. \nFind out about the biggest dinner in Cambridge\, the origins of the word snob\, and which toys kids would have been allowed to play with on Sundays. If you are lucky\, you might hear of links to Graham Greene\, Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking\, and discover why being giant\, a witch or a good liar is not a bad thing. \nYour Tour Guide\nProfessional tour guide Chris Jagger has lived as both ‘Town and Gown’ of Cambridge: first as a student and then a fellow of the University of Cambridge\, and now is one of the townsfolk. He has written history tours\, ghost tours\, women’s tours and more about Cambridge. An advisor and former trustee of the Museum\, Chris is leading these tours on a voluntary basis\, so the entirety of the ticket price supports the upkeep of the Museum. \n  \n\n\n\n\nSupporting the Museum of Cambridge\nThe Museum of Cambridge is an independent charity and does not receive funds from the Cambridge Council or the University of Cambridge.
