Capturing Cambridge brings local history to life by mapping the rich heritage of Cambridge and Cambridgeshire through an interactive map. Explore almost 17,000 records detailing the stories and photos of local people, landmarks, and communities, spanning from ancient times to the present day.
Capturing Cambridge is a project which develops the Museum of Cambridge as a resource centre and ‘home’ for local and community history projects in Cambridge. It enables people across the world to explore their family history as well as to research locations and businesses. They can post their own photos, family histories and reminiscences. Thousands of historic and contemporary photos can be found on Capturing Cambridge as well as research documents, e-books and recordings of oral history.
The website incorporates the use of modern and historic maps to depict the location of many thousands of buildings. It uses census information to list the occupants, as well as linking historic photos and transcriptions of contemporary newspaper stories.
The Capturing Cambridge website was started by the Mill Road History Society, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund from 2013-16. Since 2016, the Museum of Cambridge has managed and run Capturing Cambridge.
It is entirely run by volunteers and receives no external financial support. There are around 12,000 visitors to the site every month and a daily exchange of emails with those across the world using the site for research.
We are always seeking contributions to the project. If you have any stories or photos related to Cambridgeshire that you would like to contribute to Capturing Cambridge, please get in touch by completing our Capturing Cambridge contact form.
