The Enid Porter Room: the Museum’s tailor-made workshop space

Are you looking for a truly one-of-a-kind Museum experience for your students? At the Museum of Cambridge – the city’s independent social history museum, dedicated to telling the extraordinary stories of the ordinary people of Cambridge and the city itself – we are excited to welcome you into our versatile workshop space for a half-day of immersive education as you experience a Victorian childhood.

Workshop Structure

Immerse yourself and your students in the life of a Victorian child at the Museum of Cambridge. Explore our vast collection, including technology, education tools and toys from the 19th Century. Get hands on and learn the way Victorian children learned, and take part in household tasks children were expected to do.

This half-day session is a perfect complement your Victorian history lessons, linking closely with the KS2 and KS3 curriculum.

Beginning in the Museum’s learning space, take a look at objects from the Museum’s handling collection to uncover what was used in a Victorian classroom, before taking part in a Victorian lesson. Then, head into the Museum to find even more Victorian objects, figuring out what they are and how they worked.

Lastly, no Victorian Childhood was complete without Laundry Day! Get sudsy as we wrap up this Half Day experience.

Sessions run every Thursday, term time. Other days may be available by arrangement. Morning sessions run 10:00-12:00. Afternoon sessions run 12:30-14:30.
Sessions are for a maximum of 35 students, due to the space available in the Museum.
Please ensure a minimum of 5 adults per booking, as students will be split into 5 groups to enter the Museum.
A half-day session, running 2 hours, is £150 for UK state schools or £180 for fee-paying schools.
