The National Lottery Heritage Fund awards the Museum of Cambridge £99,000 to invest in local histories and sustainable development

With some happy news to start the spring at the Museum: thanks to the National Lottery Players, the Museum has been awarded £99,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support our Firm Foundations and Flourishing Future project! The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. This is no exception at the Museum of Cambridge; with a bright 2024 ahead of us, we’re thrilled to be working on projects that bring the history of Cambridge to life for everyone.

Firm Foundations, Flourishing Futures is a one-year project that supports our long-term sustainability by investing in local history. This year will see new talks and tours at the Museum, as well as a new outdoors space for the community to enjoy in the Museum’s historic yard. Made possible by National Lottery players, this project will allow the Museum to launch new events and activities for the community and make the best use of its spaces.

The project, Firm Foundations, Flourishing Futures, will highlight unheard stories of Cambridge history through a series of local history talks and a tour of the Museum and historic Castle Quarter. To make this happen, we’re looking forward to recruiting new volunteer roles and offering training and new opportunities to get involved with and support the Museum.

A few of the things we are looking forward to the most:

  • A year of fantastic local history talks
  • Tours of the Museum
  • Revitalising the Museum’s historic courtyard
  • Launching a sustainable venue hire service

This year-long grant will see the Museum bring history and nature together to create a welcoming urban green space in the historic White Horse Inn courtyard. Once used as stables and attached to a timber yard, the cobblestone courtyard is teeming with potential for local communities and visitors to the Museum. Keen to build on a year of carbon monitoring, the courtyard will welcome in new bio-diversity and connect people with their local history.

Firm Foundations, Flourishing Futures is made possible with the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to the National Lottery Players we’re able to support local history even more this year.
