Hello! My name is Milly, and I’m so pleased—and excited! —to be joining the team at the Museum of Cambridge in the brand-new role of Volunteer and Operations Officer.
This isn’t my first role at the Museum. For the past year and a half, I’ve been volunteering as part of the collections team, and I’ve loved every minute of it. So, when I saw this role advertised, I jumped at the chance to get even more involved with a place that’s so close to my heart.
Growing up in Cambridgeshire, I was immersed in the rich history of the city and surrounding area. My only time away from the region was while studying at the University of Brighton, where I completed a BA in Fashion and Dress History and an MA in History of Design and Material Culture. During my studies, I developed a particular interest in the cultural and social impact of uniforms—especially how colonialism has influenced their design and meaning.
Since returning to Cambridgeshire, I’ve worked in the library service and taken on a variety of volunteer roles—many of them right here at the Museum of Cambridge. Now, in my new position, I’ll be coordinating our brilliant front-of-house and tour volunteers, managing daily operations, and overseeing venue hire and group visits.
This role means a great deal to me. Having been a volunteer myself, I know how important it is to feel supported, appreciated, and empowered. Volunteers are the backbone of the Museum—we literally couldn’t open our doors without them! My aim is to ensure that every volunteer feels valued and enjoys a fulfilling experience. I look forward to getting to know each volunteer, understanding their needs and preferences, and being there to support them however I can.
The operations aspect of my role will be central to this. By sharing duty management responsibilities, I’ll be in a strong position to assist volunteers and help tackle any challenges that might arise during the day.
As the person responsible for venue hire, event bookings, and group visits, I’ll also be working hard to ensure that everyone who interacts with the Museum has a positive and memorable experience. I’m committed to delivering each booking with care and attention to detail—and hopefully encouraging others to host their next event here too!
I can’t wait to see what the future holds in this role. I’m eager to make a positive impact on the Museum, support our incredible team of volunteers, and help create a welcoming, vibrant space for our community.
