Black Cats Are Lucky

Detail of print by R. Caldicot

Did you know that if a black cat crossed your path in historic Cambridgeshire, it was thought to bring you good luck?

In the past, cats have been venerated in Cambridgeshire and the Fenland as good omens and protective presences. Fisherman thought cats could hear shoals of fish deep beneath the water’s surface, so they brought cats along with them on their fishing trips. And, in households, people believed that if cats climbed and slept in the highest part of the building, then a flood was coming and that they had better prepare for it. Cat skulls were even buried in the walls of houses to protect the inhabitants from witches and evil spells
